Centerless External Grinding Machine Manual

The centerless external grinding machine is a high‑precision equipment designed for cylindrical workpiece finishing without the need for centers or chucks. It is widely used for mass production of shafts, pins, tubes, bushings, and similar components that require accurate diameters, roundness, and surface finish. This machine supports through‑feed and in‑feed grinding methods, making it suitable for both continuous production and complex profile grinding. The machine consists of three main elements: the grinding wheel, the regulating (control) wheel, and the work rest blade. The grinding wheel performs the cutting action, removing material from the workpiece surface. The regulating wheel controls the rotation and axial movement of the workpiece, setting both speed and feed rate. The work rest blade supports the workpiece at the correct height and position between the two wheels. Precise adjustment of these three elements is essential to achieve the required dimensional accuracy.Machine construction typically features a rigid, vibration‑damping bed to ensure stability and repeatability. Both grinding and regulating wheel spindles are supported by high‑precision bearings and driven by variable‑speed motors. Wheelhead assemblies are equipped with mechanisms for fine adjustment, dressing devices, and coolant nozzles. The regulating wheel is usually inclined at a small angle relative to the grinding wheel axis to provide the through‑feed motion for long workpieces.Operation begins with setting up the work rest blade height and positioning the wheels according to workpiece diameter and required tolerance. The operator then selects wheel types and specs suitable for the material, such as aluminum oxide or silicon carbide for steels, or superabrasive wheels for hard alloys. Dressing units, either mechanical or CNC‑controlled, true and sharpen the wheels to restore cutting capability and maintain profile accuracy. Proper dressing is critical to minimize burn, chatter, and taper. The control system, which may be conventional or CNC‑based, allows the operator to set parameters including workpiece speed, grinding wheel speed, in‑feed rate, and cycle times. Advanced versions include automatic compensation for wheel wear, automatic loading and unloading devices, and integrated measurement systems for in‑process or post‑process gauging. These features support high‑volume production with consistent quality and reduced manual intervention.Coolant supply is an important part of the machine, providing lubrication, heat removal, and chip evacuation. Filtration systems maintain coolant cleanliness to extend wheel life and protect the workpiece surface. Guards, interlocks, and emergency stop devices ensure operator safety during operation, dressing, and maintenance. Routine inspection, lubrication of moving parts, and scheduled replacement of wear components help maintain long‑term accuracy and reliability of the centerless external grinding machine.
